I also wanted to talk about more than just the song, so I gave them an intro to Queen and their musical influence and got to Freddie Mercury and then I realised…that I was not sure if it would be ok to tell them that he was gay. I did tell them he died of AIDS…they did not ask exactly why or how. I did not dare tell them he was gay though.
Don’t get me wrong…I am all for sharing the knowledge. But I am here because the community, my very Muslim community, has contributed to me being here…so I was not prepared for a parent revolution right away. I am still not sure if that was a good decision or not yet. Any thoughts, opinions etc?

I think that was really wise of you, not to say that Freddy Mercury was gay. For Muslims, admitting the existence of another sexual orientation might be quite offending. Admitting it publicly I mean. In Indonesia, where I lived, I came in contact with several gay people that never came out of the closet publicly, and that is fine for them! In private everybody does what he wants… I am not saying that this is good or bad, but that it is a practice… Which brought me to the reflection: why are we, in Western societies, interested so much in the private life of the others?? It is still a kind of validation I believe… Either way, there are some “sick” curious and judgmental elements of “the other”…
